Taking a Vape on an International Flight From the US

Short answer: For a flight departing the United States, the FAA requires electronic smoking devices in carry-on baggage or on your person, protected from accidental activation. This does not mean every destination permits possession or importation. Check airline, transit-country and destination rules before traveling.

Pack the device for the flight

  • Keep the device out of checked baggage, including a bag checked at the gate.
  • Protect spare lithium batteries individually against short circuits.
  • Do not use or charge a device aboard the aircraft, according to FAA guidance.
  • Check separate liquid limits and local laws for every leg of the trip.

The old draft gave a blanket “yes” for international flights. Flight-safety rules and local possession laws are separate questions, and the latter vary by place and date.
